A Program for Students with Attention Deficit Disorder
Students with symptoms of attention-deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can enjoy success and accomplishment in college
with the help of CLE, a college program for students with special needs, such
as ADD or ADHD. College students with ADD and ADHD often struggle with the
demands and expectations of a college schedule, but CLE provides intense
individualized support and specialized assistance to students whose disability
might otherwise prevent them from succeeding in college.
Academic Support
CLE is designed to address the unique academic challenges faced by students
with ADD and ADHD. CLE mentors and advisors provide guidance specifically to students
with ADD or ADHD in order to help them make a successful college transition.
From the start, CLE helps students apply, enroll and register for college
classes. An academic support team, which includes tutors and instructional
learning coordinators, assists with study skills and time management counsel
and helps students cope with test anxiety. A variety of individualized supports
can help students meet their goals: a phone call reminder about an important
assignment; walking a student to class; even a wake-up call can help a student
with ADD or ADHD successfully navigate the challenges of college.
Independent
Living Skills
College is a time of
growth both as a student and as an individual – and a great deal of personal
growth results from living independently for the first time. College students
with ADD or ADHD often benefit from additional support outside the classroom. CLE
staff members help students set goals and understand expectations, encouraging
better decision-making — and better outcomes. They provide extra support for students
with ADD or ADHD by offering individualized incentives that properly motivate
students to interact at age-appropriate levels and give meaningful context to
everyday situations, helping students recognize and practice good
decision-making and independent living skills.
Social Skills Support
Social situations can be a source of anxiety for some students with ADD or
ADHD. Through in-the-moment facilitation of social interaction and group
discussion, CLE mentors help students recognize healthy social behavior and act
accordingly. In addition to giving students an opportunity to develop
personally, CLE helps students with ADD or ADHD prepare for effective social
interactions by setting limits and clarifying expectations. For example,
students in the CLE program learn to anticipate the consequences of their
actions and develop important decision-making skills.
