Columbia, Md. (Sept. 3, 2009) – College Living
Experience (CLE), a post-secondary program for college students with special
needs, has appointed Mary Adams director of development and alternative programming.
College Living Experience provides intensive
assistance with academic, independent living and social skills to college students with a
variety of special needs, including social and emotional maturation issues,
ADD/ADHD and autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger’s syndrome.
Adams will be responsible
for developing innovative programs that cater to CLE’s unique student
population. In the coming year, she will facilitate the launch of the CLE
Student Enrichment Series, which offers new opportunities such as volunteer, travel
abroad and summer programs to potential, former and existing CLE students, as
well as other students who can benefit from concentrated support in their
transition to post-secondary independence.
“While working with CLE, I have witnessed the incredible
success students can achieve through comprehensive support services,” Adams said. “Giving students additional opportunities to
participate in programs and activities independent of CLE sites will help them
broaden the development and application of new skills, recognizing the profound
and enduring value of experiential learning.”
Adams previously served as the
director of CLE-Austin. Under her leadership, the Austin, Texas,
site doubled student enrollment in the two years she served as director. She
has been associated with CLE for more than three years.
Adams has more than 25
years of experience in education and administration. She earned a master’s
degree in higher education, leadership and organizational change from the University of Denver. A certified professional
teacher, Adams has worked with students as a public school teacher, a private
teacher/tutor, academic/career advisor and mentor. She was an independent
education consultant for the state of Colorado
and a member of the board of the Colorado Adult Education Professional
Association before relocating to Austin
to direct CLE.
