College Preparatory Institute

For students who could benefit from an extensive orientation program before full-time college enrollment, CLE offers the College Preparatory Institute (CPI).

CPI provides an intensive introduction to college life and higher education systems for two weeks during the summer before students enter college or for students who have struggled previously in higher education. CPI provides a structured and supportive environment for students and prepares students for a successful transition to any higher education institution.

The 2010 CPI will host students at two locations, University of Denver in Denver, CO June 12 thru June 26 and University of Oregon in Eugene, OR., July 24 thru August 7.

College Readiness

Students take courses, lead by CPI staff, that prepare them to successfully navigate college systems, respond to different academic environments and practice self-advocacy. Students will learn strategies to meet the academic expectations at the college they are attending through the following courses and seminars :

  • Introduction to Higher Education Systems: Students explore the differences between high school and college academic expectations by learning how to access course information, use a syllabus and find the resources necessary for a well-rounded academic and personal experience in college.
  • Writing at the College Level: Students learn the differences between expository, description and persuasive writing styles, as well as research and source citation.
  • Skills and Strategies for College Success: Learn the necessary study skills for a college environment, such as note taking, test preparation, reading skills and obtaining lecture notes.
  • Technologies for 21st Century Learning: Students learn how to use technologies such as Blackboard, iPod downloads, web research sources, Microsoft Office software and organizational tools.
  • Self Advocacy in Academia: Students learn their rights and responsibilities under federal law including ADA, and IDEA and practice appropriate ways to become your own best advocate.
  • Financial Management: Students will learn how to navigate financial aid systems, access auxiliary funding and manage personal finances.
  • Building Your Personal Support System: Students explore appropriate social skills for developing and maintaining positive relationships with friends, parents, peers, instructors and administrators.
  • Balanced Living: Learn to maintain the critical balance between work, leisure and self-care.

Students develop new skills by participating in sessions with trained staff. CPI students reside in traditional college dormitories, utilize university food services and become familiar with campus facilities and resources with the help of staff members.

Students who Benefit

CPI is available to high school graduates whose goal is to begin their college experience with a strong foundation and understanding of higher education. The program is designed for students who would benefit from a hands-on introduction to the academic rigor and social culture of a college campus.

To qualify for CPI, students must be attending a higher education institution in Fall 2010.
